The National Funeral Committee has announced a change of venue for the public viewing of the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga’s body, moving the event from Parliament Buildings to Kasarani Stadium due to the overwhelming number of mourners.

By Thursday morning, thousands of Kenyans had already filled the precincts of Parliament, where the viewing had initially been scheduled. The swelling crowds forced security personnel and Members of Parliament to intervene to prevent a possible breach. Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna were seen climbing the gates of Parliament to address and calm the emotionally charged crowd.

The chaotic scenes followed similar events earlier at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), where mourners broke through security barriers upon the arrival of Odinga’s body from India. The breach made it nearly impossible for President William Ruto and other dignitaries to conduct the official reception ceremony as planned.

Traffic gridlocks were also reported along roads leading to Lee Funeral Home, where Odinga’s body was to be prepared for public viewing.

In a statement, the National Committee emphasized that the move to Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, was necessary to ensure public safety and accommodate the massive turnout of mourners.

Odinga’s four-day State Funeral programme, as outlined by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, will continue as scheduled.

  • Friday, October 17 – A State Funeral Service will be held at Nyayo Stadium, expected to draw local and international dignitaries.
  • Saturday, October 18 – The body will be flown to Kisumu for public viewing at Moi Stadium before being transported by road to Bondo for an overnight vigil.
  • Sunday, October 19 – The final burial ceremony will take place at his Opoda home in Bondo, Siaya County, conducted according to Anglican Church traditions.

Deputy President Kindiki reaffirmed that the late leader’s wish to be buried within 72 hours of his death would be honoured, as per the family’s request.
