Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has confirmed that reconstruction of the Nithi Bridge will begin in the coming weeks, with completion accelerated to prevent further fatalities along the dangerous stretch of road connecting Tharaka Nithi and Meru Counties.

Funding Secured

Speaking Wednesday while inspecting the Mikinduri-Kunati-Gatithini Road in Tigania East, Meru County, Kindiki said the government has allocated Sh7 billion for the new bridge.

“We needed Sh7 billion for the bridge, and we now have the funds. The contractor will be here soon. The public was engaged for their input on Monday, and I will be bringing the contractor to start construction shortly,” he stated.

The new bridge will be 880 meters long, linking Marima and Mitheru sections, and is expected to be one of the longest in the region.

Road Expansion Projects

Kindiki also announced that the Makutano-Embu-Chuka-Meru-Maua Highway will be expanded into a dual carriageway, with construction set to begin before the end of the year.

He highlighted the government’s plan to establish a National Infrastructure Fund to support road and infrastructure projects nationwide.

National Road Development

According to the DP, the government has allocated funds to complete over 6,000 km of stalled roads across the country, including 350 km in Meru County. Contractors have already been paid Sh177 billion to resume work.

“By next Christmas, we will have completed all the 6,000 km of roads that had stalled for many years. On top of these roads, we have more funds for new roads,” Kindiki declared.

He assured residents that the 10 stalled roads in Meru County have been revived and will be completed on schedule.

Political Context and Miraa Exports

Kindiki dismissed claims by political opponents that the government has neglected Meru, pointing to ongoing development projects.

On agriculture, he revealed plans to ease miraa exports to Somalia following the reopening of the Kenya-Somalia border. Security will be provided through Mandera, Liboi, and Kiunga border points to facilitate trade.
