A Bomet County court has handed down a 50-year jail sentence to Bernard Miyeiende Kerongo for possession and trafficking of bhang, alongside a Ksh. 50 million fine, highlighting the State’s ongoing crackdown on narcotics trafficking.

According to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Kerongo was intercepted on March 22, 2024, at approximately 5:55 p.m. in Mulot town along the Bomet–Narok highway while transporting ten sacks of cannabis weighing 278 kilograms, valued at Ksh. 8,340,000.

The illicit drugs were reportedly concealed in a Toyota Noah with registration number KBZ 667Z, in violation of Kenya’s Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Act.

Senior Principal Magistrate Stephen Onjoro delivered the sentence, stressing the importance of dismantling drug networks operating along critical transit corridors.

“Possession and trafficking of narcotics is a serious offense that threatens public health and safety. The sentence serves as a clear warning to those engaged in the trade,” Magistrate Onjoro said during the hearing.

Kerongo was further ordered to pay the Ksh. 50 million fine. In the event of non-payment, he will serve an additional five years in prison.

The case underscores Kenya’s determination to combat illegal drug trafficking and enforce stringent penalties on offenders.
