Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has acted swiftly following a complaint from a parent alleging corruption, abuse, and unprofessional behavior by a staff member in the Surgical Ward 4C discharge unit.
In a statement on Friday, KNH confirmed that immediate disciplinary measures were taken against the officer involved and that formal proceedings are underway in accordance with the hospital’s Human Resources policy. “We sincerely and unreservedly apologize to the affected family for the distress and frustration caused. The reported conduct is unacceptable and does not reflect the standards of care or values we uphold at KNH,” said Acting CEO Dr. Richard Lesiyampe. The hospital also confirmed that the child at the center of the complaint has been discharged and that reimbursement to the family has been initiated.
The incident arose after the parent publicly alleged that the officer at the Social Health Authority (SHA) discharge desk in Ward 4D engaged in favoritism, humiliation, and extortion while he attempted to secure his child’s release. According to the parent, he had waited in line for two days, only to observe the officer attending to select individuals privately. When he questioned the preferential treatment, he claims the officer became confrontational, demanded payment of Ksh. 2,070 for an alleged extra day of stay, and required an apology letter stamped by the area Chief before releasing his child.
The parent also stated that they were later forced to leave the facility, disputing the hospital’s assertion that the fee had been refunded.
KNH emphasized its commitment to fairness, integrity, and compassionate care, pledging continued oversight to ensure such incidents do not recur.
