Following the military-led removal of its previous government in October 2025, Madagascar is deepening cooperation with Russia as part of a broader strategy to stabilise the island nation.

President Michael Randrianirina travelled to Moscow in February 2026, marking the first official visit by a Malagasy leader in nearly 50 years. The visit is part of what Randrianirina describes as a “Refoundation,” aimed at restoring state authority, combating corruption, and rebuilding public trust after weeks of youth-led protests sparked by power and water shortages.

During his visit, Randrianirina highlighted Madagascar’s intention to engage with a diverse range of partners, including the BRICS alliance. Security cooperation with Moscow has already begun, with Russia supplying military equipment and sending a delegation to train Malagasy forces in its use.

Beyond security, the partnership targets key sectors such as agriculture through Russian fertilizers and seeds and mineral resources, leveraging Madagascar’s natural wealth for economic development.

Randrianirina has stated that a military committee will govern alongside a transitional government, with new elections planned within two years, signalling a structured path toward political normalisation.
