The government will in a few days announce new terms of service for police officers including improved remuneration for the officers.

Interior CS Kithure Kindiki said on Tuesday the new terms will also include housing, equipment, mortgages and healthcare.

"In the next day or two, the government will be announcing the measures that we are taking to ensure we review the terms and conditions of service of the National Police Service at all ranks."

"The whole idea is to adjust it to the cost of living and make it at least at par as possible with the other cadres who have an equal standing in the public service sector," Kindiki said.

He spoke during a joint security media briefing with the Inspector General of police Japhet Koome and other top security officials at the National Police College- Embakasi ‘A’ Campus, Nairobi.

He reiterated that the government is focused on professionalising the National Police Service by tightening all loopholes that existed in the past.

This, he said, includes ensuring that police officers stay away from non-policing activities and other strenuous activities that do not fall under their mandate.

He said police will be expected to perform their mandate of maintaining law and order independently without political interference or involvement in political activities.

"Let politicians from whatever formation transact their political business at their level. We will not allow any attempt to try and ask the police to perform political functions including political functions of the governing party," Kindiki affirmed.

The CS took the opportunity to reassure the country of their safety saying security apparatus across the country are on high alert.

The assurance come amid rising insecurity cases particularly across Nairobi where daily incidents of daytime muggings and stabbing incidents have become common place.

Kindiki said resource-based insecurity conflicts between herders and local communities in drought stricken regions is also an emerging security concern to the government which will be addressed wit the urgency it deserves.

"Because of drought, there is a lot of movement of especially by pastoralists and sometimes they have issues with their hosts in terms of grazing and then in the process some of the farm inputs are destroyed and there are issues arising from that," he said.

Other than that, the CS said the security apparatus are at high alert to avert any form of security threats including terrorism.

The security meeting was attended by DCI director general Mohamed Amin, deputy IGs of the National Police and Administration Police, regional police commanders from across all the eight regions, county commanders among other top police officers.
