Kenyans outraged over Kericho MCAs seminar at Weston

Kenyans have expressed outrage after a document approving Kericho MCAs to spend five days at Nairobi's Weston Hotel resurfaced.

The leaders will hold a training session on how to vet the county chief officer (CCO) nominees.

The document, which surfaced on Wednesday, was written by the House majority leader Paul Chirchir on Tuesday, the first day of the pre-vet session.

"In reference to standing order No 177, I hereby request for facilitation of all members of the county assembly to Nairobi (Weston hotel) from November 15-20, 2022," the letter reads.

"The purpose of the meeting is to conduct a pre-vetting of County Chief Officers nominees."

It bears the county stamp by the assembly speaker Patrick Mutai dated November 15 and a writing "approved."

This sparked discussions on Twitter with 'Weston Hotel' among the top trends of the day.

"Why would Kericho MCAs conduct 5-day 'pre-vetting of Chief Officers' at Weston Hotel, Nairobi? Aren't COs exempted from County Assembly vetting? Once County Public Service Board clears them, then Governor appoints them? Only CECs are vetted? Some people are messing up KKA govt image!" COFEK secretary general Stephen Mutoro said.

"This is a plunder and pure misuse of public funds by the county govt of Kericho," a tweep said.

"Soon cabinet meetings will be held in Weston Hotel, plans are underway to renovate and expand the hotel to accommodate many Rift Valley region county functions. Freedom is here," Amakanji Thomas said.

"Kericho MCAs will be travelling all the way to Nairobi, stay at Weston Hotel for a pre-vetting meeting of Chief Officers. Senator @Aaroncheruiyot will be cheering them. Freedom has come. Hallelujah," Abuga Makori tweeted.

"My backyard leaders are joking with our taxpayer's money ...why train at Weston Hotel instead taking a retreat at Kericho Tea Hotel," Waziri Waziri tweeted.

"This is what we call cartel. Kericho county coming all the way to Weston hotel Nairobi just for vetting CES," another tweep said.

"A week ago President Ruto instructed Treasury to cut Sh300 billion from annual government spending to bring the country “back to sanity. On county level, Kericho MCA's will travel all the way to Nairobi Weston Hotel to pre-vet chief officers? Can’t this process be done in Kericho?" Markmarvin asked.
