AG Muturi to challenge supreme court ruling on LGBTQ community

Attorney General Justin Muturi has stated that he will petition the Supreme Court to overturn the verdict enabling the registration of Gay non-governmental organizations.

The Supreme Court ruled on Friday that the decision to deny LGBTQ members the ability to register as an NGO, despite the fact that homosexuality is prohibited in the country, was discriminatory.

This came after lower courts in Kenya denied residents of the community the ability to register a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) to advance their rights in 2013.

Muturi, who spoke on Sunday at a church in Manyatta, Embu County, stated that Kenyans should be able to express their views on the LGBTQ issue because it affects people's lives.

He stated that the debate should take place outside of the church and that Kenyans should be invited to participate.

The AG stated that the country has values and that, in the interest of the public, he will request that the Supreme Court consider the subject in full.

Kiambu Woman Representative Ann Wamuratha, who attended the thanksgiving event, claimed the verdict was against the constitution.

Wamuratha also stated that she will table a motion in parliament to modify the Sexual Act.

Members of the church have reacted angrily to Friday's judgment. Clerics from Kenya's Redeemed Gospel Church have criticised the verdict, claiming that LGBTQ advocacy groups should not be allowed in the country.

Allowing such can bring curses to the country, according to Archbishop Arthur Kitonga, because it violates God's rules.

CITAM presiding bishop Calisto Odede, for his part, questioned the Apex court's decision, comparing LGBTQ people to "illegal practitioners" such as pedophiles.

"Many of us are left wondering whether other unlawful practitioners, such as paedophiles and those involved in incest, have the right to associate, and if not, how different they are from homosexuals. And possibly criminal organizations as well "He stated this in a statement.

Bishop Odede stated that the church will not back down from rejecting such judgements, noting that supporting gay behavior undermines African cultural standards and contradicts Christian doctrines.
