Lance Reddick, a prominent HBO series The Wire actor, has died at the age of 60, according to US media agencies.

Reddick was also well-known for his role as Charon in the John Wick action-thriller film series.

According to his publicist, the singer and actor died suddenly of natural causes on Friday in his Los Angeles home.

According to the publicist, police were called to the actor's home about 09:30 local time (16:30 GMT).

"Lance will be deeply missed," Mia Hansen, his publicist, said in a statement. "At this time, please respect his family's privacy."

Reddick was in the midst of a publicity trip for the fourth installment of the John Wick franchise, which is set to be released on March 24.

He will also appear in the upcoming John Wick spinoff Ballerina, which will star Ana de Armas.

Over his 25-year acting career, Reddick, a native of Baltimore, appeared in over a dozen films and television shows.

In the John Wick films, he played Charon, the hotel concierge at The Continental Hotel, a New York criminal underground nexus. He appeared in the first film, its two sequels, and is set to appear in the fourth.

The actor was well recognised for his breakthrough role as Baltimore police lieutenant Cedric Daniels in The Wire, a series that aired from 2002 to 2008 and portrayed the city's narcotics scene from the perspectives of law enforcement, drug dealers, and consumers.

Reddick told the Guardian in 2010 that he expected the show would be a "hit" but did not imagine it "would become this phenomenon".

The actor appeared in the Netflix series Resident Evil and the science fiction action film Godzilla vs. Kong.

He was also well-known for his voice work, which included roles in the TV sitcom Rick and Morty.

Reddick got a bachelor's degree in classical music from the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester in New York before entering the Yale School of Drama.

In 2021, he was nominated for a SAG Award alongside other cast members for his participation in the film One Night in Miami.

The actor is survived by his wife, Stephanie, as well as a daughter, Yvonne Nicole Reddick, and a son, Christopher Reddick.

Reddick told the Los Angeles Times in 2009 that he felt like a "artist at heart".

"When I got to theatre school, I knew I was at least as brilliant as the other students, but because I was a black man and I wasn't pretty, I knew I'd have to work my buttocks off to be the best that I could be," he explained at the time.

His death came two years after the overdose death of Reddick's co-star Michael K Williams, who portrayed Omar in The Wire. Four persons were charged last year for allegedly distributing the drugs that Williams used before his death.
