Messi's 2022 World Cup jerseys to be auction, predicted to top $10M

Six jerseys worn by Lionel Messi during Argentina's 2022 World Cup will be auctioned in December, Sotheby's announced on Monday, expecting their value to reach $10 million (Ksh152,000,000).

Football stars wore these jerseys during the first half of the group stage against Saudi Arabia and Mexico, as well as the subsequent matches in Australia, the Netherlands, and Croatia, and in the final against France. Argentina's victory in Qatar last year was the final feather in the cap for the striker, who has won the previous four World Cups.

If the jersey fetches more than 152 million Kenyan shillings, it could make the sale the most valuable collection of sports memorabilia sold at auction, Sotheby's said. The most expensive single ever sold at auction is the one worn by basketball legend Michael Jordan during his NBA Finals with the Chicago Bulls in 1998.

It was sold for $10.1 million last year. In recent years, retailers have become increasingly interested in sports memorabilia, which is seen as a growing market.

American tech startup AC Momento sells the apparel, which helps athletes manage their memorabilia collection. Part of the profit will be donated to the UNICAS project, an initiative of a children's hospital in Barcelona that helps children with rare diseases.

The gowns will be available for public viewing for free during the sale, from November 30 to December 14.
