The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has appointed Siaya Senator Dr. Oburu Odinga as the acting party leader following the passing of the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga.
Addressing the media on Thursday, October 16, 2025, the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) confirmed that Oburu Raila’s elder brother and a founding member of ODM will serve in an interim capacity until the party convenes to elect a substantive leader.
“The NEC has designated the Senator of Siaya County, Dr. Oburu Odinga, to act as the party leader until such a time when the top organ meets to elect a substantive leader to fill the big shoes left by our departed leader,” the party announced.
ODM reaffirmed its unity, strength, and continued commitment to the principles that defined Raila Odinga’s leadership — democracy, justice, and equality.
“ODM remains united, just as it was under Raila Odinga. We believe in a unity of purpose, a stronger movement, and a legacy that will live on for generations,” the statement read.
The announcement follows remarks by Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai, who on Wednesday, October 15, posted on X confirming that Oburu Odinga would assume the acting leadership role.
“The acting Party Leader now that Baba Raila Odinga is resting is Oburu Odinga,” Alai wrote, cautioning against political misinformation. “Don’t listen to people still in political adolescence,” he added.
As ODM enters a period of transition and reflection, Oburu Odinga is expected to guide the party through mourning while preserving its unity and charting a path forward.
Founded by Raila Odinga, ODM remains a cornerstone of Kenya’s democratic journey, symbolizing the fight for reform, inclusion, and social justice values its new interim leader has vowed to uphold.
