Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga has called on party members to exercise restraint and discipline when speaking publicly about the party’s political direction ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during ODM’s 20th anniversary celebrations, Odinga emphasized the importance of maintaining a unified voice on party matters and discouraged speculation about the party’s electoral plans.
“Don’t commit the party to things that have not been discussed. Who told you ODM does not have a candidate in 2027?” Odinga posed, hinting that the party may yet front its own presidential candidate.
He stressed that ODM has a clear internal strategy and urged members to trust the process, stating that key decisions will be communicated officially and at the appropriate time.
The remarks come amid internal tensions, with some members threatening to leave the party if it chooses to back President William Ruto’s re-election bid. Among the vocal dissenters is Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, who has insisted that party loyalty should not stifle personal convictions.
“Raila himself has said this is a democratic party. Any member should be free to express their views,” Sifuna said, pushing back against criticism for airing his concerns.
While Odinga has yet to confirm whether he will contest the presidency again in 2027, his comments suggest that ODM is carefully weighing its options — and that unity and message discipline will be central to its strategy moving forward.
As Kenya’s political landscape begins to shape up for the next election cycle, ODM appears focused on consolidating its base, minimizing internal divisions, and maintaining flexibility as it positions itself for 2027.
