Doha, Qatar – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has described the situation in Gaza as “another level of inhumane engagement” in world history, urging the international community to prioritize the crisis despite other global challenges.

Speaking at the 17th Al Jazeera Forum in Doha on Saturday, Mohamud also strongly criticised Israel’s recognition of the self-declared breakaway state of Somaliland, calling the move reckless and illegal under international law.

Gaza Crisis as a Global Priority

President Mohamud underscored the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in Gaza, stressing that the plight of Palestinians must remain central to international efforts.

“This must remain an international priority despite all other challenges globally,” he said.

Condemnation of Somaliland Recognition

Turning to regional issues, Mohamud condemned Israel’s decision to recognise Somaliland, which declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but has never been internationally recognised until last December.

“This reckless and fundamentally wrong and illegal action under international law undermines the stability, security and trade in a way that affects the Horn of Africa, the Red Sea and the wider world,” he stated.

Somaliland has operated with its own government and currency for decades, but Somalia continues to view it as an integral part of its territory. Israel’s recognition has drawn strong condemnation from Somalia and other nations.

Somalia’s Fight Against Extremism

Mohamud also highlighted Somalia’s ongoing battle against extremist groups, noting that the country is fighting both al-Qaida and ISIS.

“Our sacrifices in this endeavour are not for Somalia alone. It is for the security and stability of all, particularly in our region and the wider world,” he said.

Since his election in 2022, Mohamud has declared a “total war” against militants, who have been responsible for killing and maiming thousands of Somalis over the years.

Conclusion

President Mohamud’s remarks in Doha reflect Somalia’s dual focus: addressing global humanitarian crises such as Gaza while safeguarding regional stability against both external political challenges and internal extremist threats. His condemnation of Israel’s recognition of Somaliland underscores the sensitivity of territorial integrity in the Horn of Africa, while his call for prioritizing Gaza highlights Somalia’s alignment with broader international concerns.
