Political temperatures are rising in Mbeere North ahead of the upcoming by-election, with leaders from the Democratic Party (DP) and the Devolution Empowerment Party (DEP) accusing operatives linked to the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) of plotting to manipulate the vote.

Speaking at a rally in Kanyuambora on Sunday, October 5, 2025, DP leader Justin Muturi and DEP boss Lenny Kivuti alleged that individuals were being registered outside Embu County and planned to be ferried in on election day to tilt the outcome.

“Those planning to rig this election should know they are dialling the wrong number. We are very observant, and we want peaceful campaigns,” Muturi warned, adding that the opposition coalition had deployed strong oversight measures to protect the integrity of the poll.

Muturi threw his full support behind Newton Karish, the DP candidate, describing him as “the people’s choice” and a leader the establishment fears due to his strong record.

DEP Echoes Concerns, Calls for Vigilance

DEP leader Lenny Kivuti echoed Muturi’s claims, accusing unnamed operatives of coordinating voter registration from Nairobi.

“We are hearing they are planning for Nairobi people to be registered to come and vote here. They will find us waiting, and we will not allow them to vote since we know each other,” Kivuti asserted.

He urged calm among residents but called for vigilance to ensure a peaceful and credible election.

Candidates Express Confidence in IEBC

DP’s Newton Karish expressed confidence in the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to conduct a free and fair exercise.

“This is a litmus test for the IEBC. I believe they will deliver a credible election,” he said.

The contest has evolved into a three-way race featuring:

  • Newton Karish (DP) — backed by Justin Muturi and Lenny Kivuti.
  • Leonard Muthende (UDA) — supported by Public Service CS Geoffrey Ruku and government allies.
  • Duncan Mbui (Chama Cha Kazi) — endorsed by Moses Kuria, positioning himself as a compromise candidate with strong grassroots support.

A High-Stakes Political Battleground

With national and regional heavyweights investing political capital in the race, Mbeere North has become a critical battleground. The by-election’s outcome is expected to shape emerging political alliances and test the strength of Kenya’s electoral systems ahead of the 2027 General Election.
