Nandi Hills MP Bernard Kibor Kitur has sounded the alarm over what he describes as a disturbing rise in illegal organ harvesting, particularly kidney harvesting, in Eldoret and its environs.
In a strongly worded statement issued on Saturday, September 27, 2025, Kibor revealed that his office has received multiple inquiries pointing to the existence of criminal syndicates exploiting local healthcare institutions to conduct illicit organ trade. He described the situation as a grave violation of human rights and a threat to the integrity of Kenya’s healthcare system.
The legislator cited the case of Amon Kipruto Melly, a 22-year-old from Kipkenyo, whose mother claimed that his kidney was harvested at a private hospital in June 2024 for KSh600,000. Investigations have since revealed troubling patterns of identity falsification, with hospitals allegedly registering victims under fabricated Somali identities using falsified alien IDs.
Another reported case involved Emmanuel Kipkosgei from Simat Location, whose genuine ID was fraudulently altered to register him under a false Somali identity. According to Kibor, such falsification has enabled the syndicate to mask victims’ true identities and collude with criminal networks.
While victims are often promised up to KSh1.2 million, most only receive between KSh200,000 and KSh600,000, leaving them exploited and vulnerable.
“This matter demands transparency, accountability, and swift action. No individual or institution is above the law. We are committed to upholding human rights, protecting the dignity of every citizen, and safeguarding the integrity of our healthcare system,” Kibor stressed.
He urged the government to urgently dismantle both local and international syndicates involved in organ trafficking and called for tighter oversight within healthcare institutions to prevent further exploitation.
Kibor concluded by assuring that regular updates will be issued as more verified information emerges, underscoring that the fight against illegal organ harvesting is not only a legal issue but also a matter of human dignity and ethical responsibility.
