Government Pays KSh32 Million to 32 Victims of Human-Wildlife Conflict in Siaya and Kisumu

The State Department for Wildlife has paid KSh32 million to 32 beneficiaries affected by human-wildlife conflict in Siaya and Kisumu counties. The compensation covers deaths, injuries and destruction of crops and livestock caused by wild animals. Conservation Secretary Dr John Chumo said the government aims to clear the national compensation backlog by the end of 2027, while KWS officials urged communities to adopt measures that reduce encounters with wildlife. A new KWS post is also being established in Usigu to improve response to rising incidents involving hippos, crocodiles and hyenas.

Mwingi Central MP Sparks Outrage After Threatening Lifewater Canada Over Boreholes

Mwingi Central MP Gideon Mulyungi has come under fire after a viral video showed him threatening Lifewater Canada, an international NGO, over its borehole projects in his constituency. Mulyungi insisted that the organisation involve local residents and his office in its development activities, warning it to “take your boreholes back to Canada” if it failed to do so. The remarks have triggered a social media backlash, with critics accusing the MP of political gatekeeping and prioritising political interests over the urgent need for clean water. Lifewater Canada has yet to issue a public response.

Rose Mulwa, Son Protest State Treatment in Dr Victoria Mutiso Murder Case

Rose Mulwa and her son, Chris Mulwa, have protested the State’s handling of investigations and proceedings in the murder case involving Dr Victoria Mutiso. Their lawyer, Danstan Omari, raised concerns over the prosecution’s conduct, the number of suspects charged and unresolved questions surrounding the alleged shooter. The prosecution said the 21-day detention period had expired and that a charge sheet had been filed before the High Court. The court closed the miscellaneous applications and directed the defence to raise its concerns before the High Court.
