Lang’ata Member of Parliament and event organiser, Phelix Odiwuor (Jalang’o), has joined the growing debate surrounding musician Kevin Kioko, popularly known as Bahati, after the release of his latest controversial song.
The track, which features explicit visuals and bold lyrics, has sparked heated discussions across social media, with fans and critics questioning whether the former gospel sensation has strayed too far from his spiritual roots.
Jalang’o’s Reminder to Bahati
Responding to Bahati’s reaction to the backlash, Jalang’o reminded the singer of a vow he made early in his career. During the 2015 Groove Awards, where Bahati emerged a winner, he publicly promised never to abandon gospel music, declaring in front of a global audience that he would remain committed to God.
Jalang’o referenced this moment while reacting to the controversy, saying Bahati once vowed: “Mungu sitakuwacha.”
Diana Marua Speaks Out
In the midst of the uproar, Bahati’s wife, Diana Marua, issued a statement clarifying her position. She expressed respect for her husband’s artistic journey but firmly distanced herself from his new musical direction.
“My focus is on my businesses, partnerships, and the brands that trust me. That means carrying myself in a way that reflects responsibility, growth, and the values I stand for,” she said in her statement released on Wednesday, October 1, 2025.
Diana stressed that while she supports Bahati as an artist, she will not involve herself in the recent path his music has taken. Highlighting the importance of protecting her brand, she emphasized the need to remain intentional about the content and spaces she aligns with.
The Bigger Picture
Bahati’s latest release has once again brought to the surface the tension between artistic freedom and public expectation, especially for artists who began their careers in gospel music. While his bold creative choices continue to spark debate, the reactions from figures like Jalang’o and Diana Marua highlight the personal and professional complexities surrounding the star’s evolution.
