Search and rescue operations are underway in Shauri Moyo, Nairobi, following the collapse of a building at Blue Estate in Kamukunji Sub-County, the Ministry of Interior confirmed on Monday, March 16, 2026.

According to a ministry press statement, the structure collapsed during an attempted demolition earlier in the day. The building is located along the riparian corridor of the Nairobi River and had been earmarked for removal as part of the ongoing Nairobi River Regeneration Project, spearheaded by the Nairobi Rivers Commission.

Reports indicate that several individuals may be trapped inside the collapsed structure. Emergency response teams including the Kenya Defence Forces, National Police Service, National Government Administrative Officers, and the Kenya Red Cross were rapidly deployed to the site to conduct search and rescue operations.

So far, two people have been rescued from the debris. One sustained minor injuries and was transported to hospital for treatment, while the other was unharmed.

The Office of the County Commissioner, Nairobi North, is closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates as rescue and assessment efforts continue.

Authorities have urged the public to avoid the area to allow emergency teams to operate safely and without obstruction.

The incident highlights ongoing challenges in managing building safety and urban regeneration along Nairobi’s river corridors, where demolition operations intersect with densely populated areas.
