The Prince and Princess of Wales met with Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu at Windsor Castle on Wednesday morning, marking the first Nigerian state visit to the United Kingdom in 37 years.
The visit comes amid significant bilateral and Commonwealth ties, with the UK home to a large Nigerian diaspora. On Thursday, President Tinubu is scheduled to meet British Prime Minister Keir Starmer as well as members of the Nigerian community abroad.
Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch, who is of Nigerian descent, has previously publicly criticised Nigeria over issues including corruption and violence, adding context to ongoing discussions about governance and reform.
This historic engagement follows a prior reception of President Tinubu by then-Prince Charles in September 2024. The last official Nigerian state visit to the UK occurred in 1989, highlighting the significance of this diplomatic event.
The visit coincides with a tragic security situation in Nigeria, where coordinated blasts in the northeastern city of Maiduguri reportedly killed 23 people and injured over 100, underlining the ongoing challenges the Nigerian government faces domestically.
