United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has appointed former Haitian Prime Minister Garry Conille as the new UN Resident Coordinator in Kenya, the organization announced on Wednesday. Conille officially assumed his post the same day.
According to the UN, Conille brings over 20 years of experience in international development, humanitarian affairs, and public administration, with a strong record of leadership across the UN system. The 60-year-old has served with the United Nations since 1999, including as Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean at UNICEF.
Conille previously held UN Resident Coordinator roles in Burundi and Jamaica between 2017 and 2022. In Haiti, he first served as Prime Minister from 2011 to 2012 and returned in 2024 as part of the Transitional Presidential Council, overseeing initial deployments of Kenyan troops to help restore security amid severe gang violence. He was succeeded by Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, Haiti’s current acting prime minister.
In Kenya, Conille is expected to focus on implementing the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework, supporting initiatives aimed at sustainable development, humanitarian coordination, and strengthening partnerships with local stakeholders.
