Former Kenya Sevens captain Andrew Amonde has backed Joshua Weru to succeed in the National Football League (NFL).
Were made history as the first Kenyan and East African athlete to sign with the Philadelphia Eagles through the NFL International Player Pathway Program. Having previously watched him play for the Kenya Simbas, Amonde believes he has what it takes to excel at the highest level.
“He is a top player with the skills to succeed in the NFL. I have seen him play for the Simbas, and you can clearly see a disciplined athlete who knows what he wants to achieve in life. I fully back him to succeed,” said Amonde.

“He is physically fit, powerful, and has a big body—exactly what the NFL requires. On top of that, he has speed. That combination is hard to stop,” he added.
Were becomes only the second Kenyan to feature in the NFL after Daniel Adongo, who played for the Indianapolis Colts between 2013 and 2015. KCB RFC head coach says his breakthrough could open doors for more Kenyan players.
“If you look at the level of rugby in Kenya, we have many players with similar potential. I hope we see more of them getting such opportunities,” he said.
