Residents of Giacai village in Central Kirinyaga County are calling for swift investigations following a disturbing incident on Friday night, where over 20 police officers reportedly stormed a local bar, assaulted patrons, and caused injuries—without providing any explanation for their actions.
Eyewitnesses claim that the officers, believed to be from Kerugoya Police Station, physically roughed up customers, including an elderly man who sustained a serious eye injury. Solomon Njue, a local resident, alleged that the officers also harassed women and made away with cash from the bar, which was being inaugurated that evening. Tear gas was reportedly lobbed inside the premises, further escalating the chaos.
When contacted by the media, Kirinyaga Central Sub-county Police Commander John Torori directed inquiries to his deputy, Lydia Linkanya, who denied knowledge of any sanctioned operation in Giacai. “I have launched an investigation because I’m not aware of the Kirinyaga Central operation. I only know about Kagio operations,” she stated.
The incident has sparked widespread concern among residents, who are now demanding accountability and transparency from the police. Community members say they will not rest until justice is served for those harmed in what they are calling an unprovoked and unlawful act of violence.
