Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu has stirred political debate after claiming that President William Ruto’s leadership is increasingly dependent on opposition leader Raila Odinga.

Speaking during a TV interview on Thursday, October 2, 2025, Nyutu alleged that the government’s primary concern has shifted from addressing citizens’ needs to ensuring Odinga’s satisfaction.

“All President Ruto and his government care about these days is to know whether Baba is happy. Without Baba, Ruto can even be impeached by Parliament any day, anytime,” the senator remarked.

According to Nyutu, Ruto’s reliance on Odinga has become central to his political stability and ability to navigate parliamentary challenges.

His comments follow Odinga’s recent defence of his collaboration with Ruto in establishing a broad-based government. Speaking at the funeral of veteran politician Phoebe Asiyo in August, Odinga maintained that the partnership was necessary to avert a national crisis.

Odinga argued that Kenya was on the brink of political and social collapse last year, warning against dismissing the circumstances that led to the alliance.

“We sacrificed so that there could be peace in this country. We did it in the best interests of our country. Kenya must move forward,” Odinga said.

While Nyutu portrays Ruto’s dependency on Odinga as a political weakness, Odinga frames their cooperation as a safeguard for Kenya’s long-term stability. The debate underscores the delicate balance of power shaping the country’s leadership and governance.
