The late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s well-known passion for football and particularly for Gor Mahia and Arsenal was celebrated on Sunday, October 26, 2025, as fans from both clubs paid heartfelt tributes at his final resting place in Kang’o Ka Jaramogi, Bondo, Siaya County.

Dressed in white and maroon hats, Gor Mahia players and supporters visited Raila’s mausoleum, carrying flowers and flags in his honour. The group described him as a “true football enthusiast” whose love for the sport transcended politics and generations. They laid wreaths at his grave and observed a moment of silence to remember a man many considered part of the Gor Mahia family.

Earlier in the day, Arsenal fans also visited the site, donning the club’s signature red jerseys. They placed flowers at the grave, sang the Arsenal anthem, and shared fond memories of Raila’s unwavering devotion to the English Premier League giants.

The twin tributes showcased how Raila’s passion for football united Kenyans from all walks of life.

During the English Premier League Trophy Tour at State House, Nairobi, on Friday, October 24, President William Ruto also reflected on Raila’s deep affection for Arsenal, noting that their shared love for the team often sparked friendly banter.

“Unfortunately, we lost one of our big Arsenal fans, Raila Odinga, and we really feel that we lost somebody who was always in the game with us,” President Ruto said.

Raila Odinga, who passed away in India on October 15, 2025, was a lifelong supporter of football. Beyond cheering from the stands, he actively promoted sports development and frequently attended local matches to encourage young players.

For decades, Raila’s bond with Gor Mahia remained steadfast, with many in the club viewing him as an honorary member of their extended family.

Sunday’s joint tributes by Gor Mahia and Arsenal supporters underscored that Raila’s legacy extends far beyond politics — living on through the shared spirit of football that continues to inspire unity among his admirers.
