Audio streaming giant Spotify is expanding its platform beyond sound, announcing plans to introduce music videos for Premium subscribers in the United States and Canada in the coming weeks.
The move marks a major step for the Sweden-based company, which until now has focused primarily on audio streaming, with limited video content mainly in the form of video podcasts.
According to a Spotify spokesperson, the feature will allow users to switch seamlessly between audio-only and video modes, offering a more dynamic listening experience.
“We’ll have more details to share soon,” the spokesperson said. “In our previous announcements about music videos in other markets, we confirmed they were exclusive to Premium users.”
Spotify revealed that over 390 million users have already viewed video podcasts on the platform highlighting growing demand for multimedia experiences within its ecosystem.
The introduction of music videos places Spotify in direct competition with YouTube, which has long dominated the online music video space for nearly two decades. By expanding into video, Spotify aims to enhance engagement, retain Premium subscribers, and potentially attract artists seeking new ways to connect with their audiences.
