France captain Kylian Mbappé has been ruled out of this weekend’s World Cup qualifier against Azerbaijan due to an ankle injury, the French Football Federation (FFF) confirmed on Friday.

The Real Madrid forward, 26, netted a brace in Thursday’s 4-0 victory over Ukraine, a result that sealed France’s qualification for next year’s tournament. However, he will not travel for Sunday’s Group D fixture in Baku after experiencing inflammation in his right ankle.

According to the FFF, Mbappé will undergo medical tests in Madrid to assess the extent of the issue.

Head coach Didier Deschamps faces additional selection challenges, with Eduardo Camavinga sidelined by injury and Manu Koné unavailable due to suspension for the final match of the qualifying campaign.
