The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has issued a safety alert following unusual wildlife activity near residential zones in Nairobi. In a statement on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, the agency urged residents to remain vigilant as rangers assess and manage the situation.
Two lionesses were observed moving outside their usual territory in Nairobi National Park, venturing dangerously close to human settlements. Officials reported that the animals were first sighted near the Sholinke Trading Area, approximately 8.3 kilometres from the park boundary.
“KWS is monitoring the situation closely. Two lionesses from Nairobi National Park have been sighted in the Sholinke Trading Area, approximately 8.3 km from the park boundary. Latest coordinates: 37 M 261961 UTM 9834651,” the agency stated.
Rangers have been deployed to track and safely guide the lionesses back into the park. Veterinary teams are also on standby to dart and relocate the animals if necessary.
Safety Precautions for Residents
KWS is advising members of the public to exercise caution: avoid the area, keep children indoors, and refrain from approaching or attempting to feed the lions. Any sightings should be reported immediately through the KWS hotlines: Toll Free 0800 597 000 or WhatsApp 0726 610 509.
History of Incidents
Encounters between lions and Nairobi residents have become increasingly frequent. In June 2025, a lioness was captured in Ongata Rongai after CCTV footage showed it scaling a wall and seizing a dog from a private property. In July 2021, a young male lion wandered out of Nairobi National Park into the same area, sparking widespread concern as it was spotted near homes and busy neighbourhoods.
KWS emphasizes that the current measures aim to protect both the public and the wildlife, reinforcing the importance of coexistence in areas adjacent to the park.
