Former Chief Justice David Maraga has called for the suspension of the Competency-Based Education (CBE) system, arguing that structural deficiencies and poor implementation have rendered it ineffective.
Speaking as a 2027 presidential hopeful and leader of the United Green Movement party, Maraga said the current education framework is failing learners and placing an undue financial and administrative burden on parents.
He faulted the government for rolling out the system without adequate public participation or stakeholder consultation, describing the process as disorganised and exclusionary.
“CBE was not implemented following proper public engagement and consultations. That is why the system is shambolic. We must plan an education framework that works for everyone and leaves no one behind,” Maraga said.
The former Chief Justice urged the government to initiate a comprehensive review of the system, with meaningful involvement from key stakeholders, including parents, teachers, and education experts, to ensure any reforms are inclusive and sustainable.
Maraga further accused the Kenya Kwanza administration of failing to resolve persistent challenges affecting learners’ transitions between different education levels, warning that these shortcomings continue to disrupt students’ academic progress and strain households across the country.
