President William Ruto has nominated Dr. Ida Odinga, widow of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, for appointment as Kenya’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
The announcement was made in a communiqué issued on Friday by Head of Public Service Felix Koskei, who confirmed that the nomination has been formally transmitted to the National Assembly for consideration and approval, in line with constitutional requirements governing appointments to the Foreign Service.
A Distinguished Career
Koskei described Mama Ida, as she is popularly known, as a distinguished educationist, civic leader, and advocate for social justice and gender equity.
Her career began as a graduate teacher at Highway Secondary School in Nairobi, before moving to Kenya High School, where she taught for more than a decade.
The communiqué highlighted her lifelong commitment to advancing women’s education and empowerment, standing against authoritarianism, promoting freedom of expression, and championing gender equity.
Role in Democratic Reform
In the early 1990s, amid Kenya’s transition from a single-party state to multiparty democracy, Mama Ida played a pivotal role as the founding Chairperson of the League of Kenya Women Voters.
Since then, she has consistently championed initiatives aimed at improving the lives of women, children, youth, and vulnerable communities.
Leadership Beyond Public Service
In addition to her civic work, Mama Ida has provided leadership in the private sector through East African Spectre, a liquefied gas cylinder manufacturing company contributing to Kenya’s energy sector.
Her influence extends beyond Kenya, where she is recognised as a credible voice for Africa.
Recognition and Honours
Mama Ida’s contributions have earned her numerous accolades, including:
- Two honorary Doctor of Letters degrees
- Kenya’s highest civilian honour, the Elder of the Order of the Golden Heart (E.G.H.), awarded in 2018
- The Trailblazer Award
- A Lifetime Achievement Award from the Human Achievers Foundation
Amplifying Kenya’s Voice on Environmental Diplomacy
Koskei noted that her appointment, subject to parliamentary approval, is expected to amplify Kenya’s voice on environmental issues and reinforce the country’s longstanding leadership in environmental diplomacy, particularly as host of UNEP’s global headquarters in Nairobi.
“Her appointment to this role, subject to the requisite parliamentary approval, is expected to amplify Kenya’s voice on environmental issues and further reinforce the country’s longstanding leadership in environmental diplomacy, as well as its pivotal role as host of the UN’s principal environmental authority,” Koskei stated.
Conclusion
Dr. Ida Odinga’s nomination reflects both her distinguished record of service and Kenya’s commitment to global environmental leadership. If approved, her appointment will mark a new chapter in the country’s diplomatic engagement, strengthening its role in shaping international environmental policy.
