Vereeniging, South Africa – Dozens of mourners gathered at a sports complex in Vereeniging on Sunday to bid farewell to three schoolchildren who lost their lives in a tragic school bus crash earlier this week.
The memorial service drew government ministers, pupils from several schools, and members of the public, all united in grief and solidarity with the bereaved families.
Leaders Offer Condolences
Panyaza Lesufi, Premier of Gauteng province, addressed the mourners with a heartfelt message, emphasizing that the tragedy was being mourned not only by the families but by the entire nation.
“We come here hurt. We come here disappointed. We come here disturbed. We come here limping and our emotions drained,” Lesufi said.
Sindisiwe Chikunga, Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, also offered words of comfort, assuring families that the nation shared in their grief.
“Your grief is the nation’s grief. Your love is the nation’s lesson,” she said.

Authorities confirmed that two teenage girls succumbed to their injuries on Thursday, raising the death toll to 14. The bus driver has since been charged with murder.
The crash occurred on Monday morning when a private minibus transporting 16 students to various schools in southern Johannesburg collided with a truck around 7 a.m. Twelve children died at the scene.
Seven people, including five students, the bus driver, and a truck passenger, were injured and hospitalized. Three of the injured have since been discharged.
