For more than a month, the family of Desmond Barrack searched desperately in Mombasa after he went missing shortly after arriving in the city for business in early January. Their search ended tragically when his body was discovered at the Coast General Teaching and Referral Morgue, leaving loved ones devastated and demanding clarity on the circumstances of his death.
Conflicting Accounts
The family claims Desmond had visible head injuries, while hospital officials maintain he was brought in by a Good Samaritan who reported that he had been involved in an accident.
Elwin Omondi, Desmond’s brother, expressed frustration:
“Inasemekana alipata accident tarehe 26 aliletwa na msamaria mwema… kinachotushangaza hakuna details za huyo msamaria mwema.”
His mother, Melvin Atieno, added:
“Hiyo gari iliyomleta ni gari gani? Ndio atleast tujue kama aligongwa kwa barabara… alikuwa na head injury na pia mwili yake haiko sawa.”
Hospital Position
The hospital insists Desmond was admitted in critical condition and treated for a day before succumbing to his injuries. However, officials acknowledge there are no records of the person who brought him in, fueling the family’s suspicions.
Calls for Transparency
The family is demanding CCTV footage to establish whether Desmond arrived at the facility dead or alive.
“Mwenye kumleta ndio hatujui ni nani, tumejaribu kuitisha CCTV footage lakini bado hawajatupea,” said Elwin.
Brother-in-law Raymond Oboo echoed the call, stressing the need to know who brought Desmond to the hospital and under what circumstances.
Investigations Underway
Police have launched investigations, and a post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted to determine the cause of death. For the family, however, the unanswered questions remain painful: who brought Desmond to the hospital, what happened before, and why there are no records of his arrival.
Conclusion
The case highlights broader concerns about accountability and transparency in emergency admissions. As investigations proceed, Desmond Barrack’s family continues to seek justice and closure in the wake of their tragic loss.
