Ghana on Monday welcomed a new group of citizens during a swearing-in ceremony held in the capital, Accra, where members of the African diaspora officially took the oath of allegiance.
The ceremony marks another milestone in Ghana’s ongoing efforts to reconnect with descendants of Africans displaced during the trans-Atlantic slave trade and to encourage members of the historical diaspora to reclaim their heritage.
Reconnecting Africa and Its Diaspora
Speaking during the ceremony, Ghana’s Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang emphasized the broader significance of reconnecting Africa with its diaspora communities.
“We believe that reconnecting Africa and her diaspora heals historical wounds and unleashes new possibilities for global cooperation, cultural renewal and economic transformation,” she said in remarks to the newly sworn-in citizens.
Once a major hub in the trans-Atlantic slave trade, Ghana has in recent years positioned itself as a leading destination for diaspora communities seeking to reconnect with their ancestral roots.
Growing Number of Diaspora Citizens
According to government figures, Ghana has granted citizenship to about 1,000 members of the historical diaspora over the past decade, reflecting the country’s commitment to strengthening ties with people of African descent around the world.
For many of the new citizens, the moment represents far more than a legal procedure. It is a deeply personal milestone tied to identity, heritage, and future opportunities.
New citizen Chauncia Willis Johnson expressed enthusiasm about becoming part of Ghana’s national community.
“I feel elated. I’m excited for the future,” Johnson said. “I’m excited for what I, my family, my friends, my loved ones who will join me we’re excited for what we will pour into Ghana and also what we will learn at the feet of Ghanaians.”
Temporary Suspension of Applications
Despite the continued interest from diaspora communities, Ghana recently temporarily suspended new citizenship applications. Authorities said the pause is intended to improve the accessibility and efficiency of the process.
Officials have not yet announced when the application system will reopen.
Strengthening Cultural and Economic Links
Ghana’s citizenship initiatives form part of broader efforts to strengthen cultural, economic, and historical connections between Africa and its global diaspora. Programs promoting heritage tourism, investment, and cultural exchange have increasingly attracted visitors and potential new citizens from around the world.
