In a brazen early morning heist that has stunned Kisumu’s central business district, police have launched a manhunt for six armed robbers who stormed an M-Pesa shop along Oginga Odinga Street, making away with Ksh.850,000 in cash and other valuables.
The incident occurred at around 7:00 AM, sending shockwaves among traders and residents in the bustling commercial area. According to a police report, the assailants — armed with an AK-47 rifle and pistols — arrived on an unmarked motorcycle and a saloon car before forcefully gaining entry into the shop.
Witnesses reported two warning shots were fired, and the robbers assaulted two M-Pesa attendants, David Odhiambo and Grace Mumbi, using the butt of their firearms. Both victims sustained head injuries and were promptly taken to Kisumu County Hospital, where they are reported to be in stable condition.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) responded swiftly to the scene and recovered two spent cartridges. Investigations are ongoing as law enforcement works to identify and apprehend the suspects.
The incident has raised serious concerns about security in the area, especially given the proximity of several banks and the regular presence of police patrols. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
