Scottish Authorities Investigate Missing Commonwealth Games Athletes After Glasgow 2026

Glasgow, Scotland — Scottish authorities are investigating the whereabouts of several athletes who failed to return home following the conclusion of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, with reports indicating that members of the Ugandan and Pakistani boxing teams are among those unaccounted for.

Police Scotland confirmed it had received reports that several competitors were missing after the Games officially concluded on August 2. Officers are now working alongside relevant authorities to establish the circumstances surrounding their disappearance.

"Police Scotland has received reports of several athletes who are unaccounted for. Inquiries are ongoing to assess the circumstances, and early engagement is taking place with the Home Office," a police spokesperson said, according to the BBC.

According to local reports, four Ugandan boxers—Nuhu Batte, Angel Katushabe, Ibrahim Kemis, and Emily Nakalema—did not return to Kampala with the rest of Uganda's Commonwealth Games delegation after the team's participation ended.

A similar incident has also been reported involving Pakistan's boxing team. Local media said one boxer was missing when the delegation prepared to depart Glasgow. Team officials reportedly searched his accommodation before leaving but were unable to locate him.

Authorities have not officially disclosed the reasons why the athletes remained in Scotland. However, Ugandan broadcaster NBS Sport reported that one of the missing boxers claimed the group intended to seek asylum in Scotland and continue pursuing their boxing careers there, citing better opportunities for training, competition, and professional development.

The reported disappearances come despite Commonwealth Games regulations requiring athletes to vacate official accommodation shortly after completing their events under the tournament's length-of-stay policy.

Incidents involving athletes remaining in host countries after major international sporting competitions are not unprecedented. During the 2014 Commonwealth Games, which were also held in Glasgow, several competitors failed to return to their home countries, with some later applying for asylum in the United Kingdom.

One of the most notable cases was that of Cameroonian weightlifter Cyrille Tchatchet II, who remained in Britain after competing at the 2014 Games. After rebuilding his life and sporting career in the UK, he returned to compete at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, where he secured a silver medal.

The latest developments have reignited discussions about the challenges faced by athletes from developing nations, including access to elite training facilities, financial support, and opportunities for professional advancement. Authorities in Scotland continue their investigations, while officials from the affected countries are expected to work with British authorities to determine the whereabouts of the missing athletes.
