Spanish football giants Atletico Madrid have reached a transfer agreement with Brazilian club Botafogo to sign Argentine midfielder Thiago Almada, pending a successful medical and contract signing.
The 24-year-old World Cup winner brings a wealth of international and club experience to La Liga. Almada, who played a key role in Argentina’s 2022 World Cup triumph and featured in the 2024 Paris Olympics, is known for his creativity and flair as an attacking midfielder.
He began his professional career with Velez Sarsfield in 2018 at just 17 years old before moving to Major League Soccer in 2022, where he was named MLS Rookie of the Year with Atlanta United.
After a standout season, Almada joined Botafogo in 2023, where he made 26 appearances and helped the club secure both the Brazilian league title and the prestigious Copa Libertadores. His impressive performances earned him a loan move to French side Lyon in January, where he registered two goals and five assists in 20 matches.
Atletico Madrid now hopes Almada’s skill and vision will bolster their midfield options as they prepare for the upcoming season.
