Retail giant Carrefour has unveiled a new initiative, ‘Choose Better’, aimed at helping Kenyan consumers make more informed, healthier, and environmentally sustainable shopping decisions. The program is part of Carrefour’s broader commitment to promoting healthier lifestyles and supporting national goals in public health, food security, and environmental sustainability.
Through enhanced product labelling and clear nutrition information, Choose Better makes it easier for shoppers to identify items that are nutritious, locally sourced, or eco-friendly. This includes prominently displayed labels like ‘Grown in Kenya’ to support local farmers, as well as indicators for responsible sourcing and sustainable packaging.
Currently, over 680 fruit and vegetable products have been tagged under the program in Carrefour stores and its mobile app, with more expected to follow. Customers purchasing these designated items benefit from exclusive discounts and bonus MyCLUB loyalty points, incentivizing healthier and more sustainable choices.
“At Carrefour, we believe retail plays a critical role in encouraging better choices that contribute to healthier communities and a more sustainable future,” said Christophe Orcet, Regional Director – East Africa at Majid Al Futtaim Retail.
Beyond store shelves, Choose Better also emphasizes community engagement and education. The program has introduced school tours focused on nutritional awareness, teaching students about balanced diets using the Healthy Plate model. To date, 210 students from SOS Children’s Village and Kibathi Junior School have participated, with plans to expand to more schools.
The Choose Better program stands as a meaningful step toward transforming retail into a force for good empowering customers, supporting local agriculture, and driving long-term environmental impact.
