Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has announced that the opposition is compiling evidence to submit a case against President William Ruto at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague. The accusations focus on alleged human rights abuses during anti-government protests, including excessive police force, abductions, and extrajudicial killings of youth activists.
Speaking during a town hall meeting with Kenyans in Seattle, Gachagua criticized the government’s handling of recent demonstrations, particularly by the Gen Z movement, and accused President Ruto of issuing unlawful orders targeting protesters.
“We have put up a team that is documenting all inhuman actions against protesters,” Gachagua said. “We are collecting evidence to take William Ruto to The Hague because you need a future after his exit.”
He also cautioned the youth against engaging in dialogue with the government, suggesting it would only serve to dilute their momentum. “The issues you’ve raised have been heard. The next battle is at the ballot box,” he urged.
Joining Gachagua in the criticism, Party of Liberation and Progress (PLP) leader Martha Karua reaffirmed her confidence in defeating the current administration through democratic means.
“Even if Ruto appoints Kasongo as IEBC chair — even if he becomes the entire commission — we will still win. But we must stand together,” Karua said, emphasizing the need for unity among opposition supporters.
The developments come amid mounting national and international scrutiny over Kenya’s handling of civil dissent and protester rights. The ICC move, if pursued, would mark a significant escalation in the political standoff.
