Two youth leaders from the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), Wanjiku Thiga and Peter KaWanjiru, have been released from custody after the Kahawa Law Courts granted each of them a bond of Ksh200,000 with a surety of the same amount, or an alternative cash bail of Ksh50,000.
Their release comes amid escalating legal tensions, as both face serious charges related to the alleged torching of the Kiambu Law Courts during anti-government protests on June 25. The court, however, found no compelling reason to continue holding them, a point emphasized by Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina, who is also part of their defense team.
DCP Party Leader Rigathi Gachagua lauded the legal team’s efforts, posting on social media: “DCP would like to take this opportunity to thank all our lawyers who took part in ensuring justice is served.”
Despite being granted bail earlier by the Ruiru Law Courts, Peter KaWanjiru was re-arrested on July 8 by the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit. His co-accused, Wanjiku Thiga, was also re-arrested shortly after initially being released on bail. Both are now facing terrorism and arson-related charges approved by Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Renson Igonga, who has also linked 36 other individuals to the case.
As the legal proceedings unfold, the DCP has reiterated its support for its youth leaders and expressed concern over what it perceives as an increasingly punitive approach toward political dissent.
