Dr. Fred Matiang’i Declares 2027 Presidential Ambition, Promises Reform Without Political Baggage

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i has officially signaled his intention to contest for the presidency in the upcoming 2027 General Election, affirming that his ambition is driven by service—not vengeance or political rivalry.

In an interview with K24, Dr. Matiang’i emphasized that his candidacy is rooted in a desire to restore hope and dignity to a nation grappling with economic hardship, political uncertainty, and rising public discontent. “I have no scores to settle with anyone… I have no political debts,” he stated. “I am here for only one purpose – making the contribution to fix the challenges that face my country and to go forward.”

Dr. Matiang’i positioned himself as a results-oriented leader, urging Kenyans to judge him based on his track record in public service. He cited Kenya’s rich resources and vibrant, educated youth as the backbone of a potential economic resurgence. “Kenya has a great capacity and we will rise again,” he said confidently. “Our future will be better.”

On the political front, Matiang’i dispelled concerns over divisions in the opposition, saying that unity talks are ongoing and that he will soon unveil the political party under which he will vie for the presidency.

The former CS is part of a growing coalition of opposition heavyweights aiming to unseat President William Ruto. This emerging alliance includes Martha Karua (People’s Liberation Party), Eugene Wamalwa (DAP-K), former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua (Democracy for Citizens Party), Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, and former Public Service CS Justin Muturi.

Together, they plan to develop a cohesive strategy to present a formidable alternative in 2027—one focused on reform, stability, and restoring public trust in leadership.

As the political landscape continues to shift, Matiang’i’s entry into the race sets the stage for a competitive and potentially transformative election cycle.
