Hundreds of Sudanese nationals gathered at Cairo’s central train station this week as part of a new Egyptian government initiative offering free train rides back to Khartoum, Sudan’s capital. The move comes following the recent recapture of Khartoum by the Sudanese Armed Forces from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
The campaign marks a significant step in Sudan’s efforts to recover from a devastating civil war that began in April 2023. The conflict between the national military and the RSF has triggered one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, with over 40,000 people killed and millions displaced.
Khartoum, once a fierce battleground, is now slowly rebuilding, encouraging some citizens to make the journey home and begin the long road to recovery.
Egypt, which hosts over 1.5 million Sudanese refugees, remains a key player in regional humanitarian support. The government’s transport initiative is being seen as both a logistical lifeline and a gesture of solidarity with the Sudanese people during this critical phase of post-conflict transition.
