Liverpool’s new signing Florian Wirtz scored his first goal for the club as the Premier League champions defeated Yokohama F. Marinos 3-1 in a pre-season friendly in Japan on Wednesday.
French forward Hugo Ekitike made his debut just a week after joining from Eintracht Frankfurt in a £69 million ($92 million) move. Despite Liverpool’s dominance, it was Yokohama who struck first through Asahi Uenaka in the 55th minute. Wirtz equalized soon after, converting a Mohamed Salah assist with a powerful right-foot finish before Trey Nyoni and Rio Ngumoha added goals to seal the win in front of over 65,000 fans.
Liverpool also confirmed the sale of Colombian forward Luis Diaz to Bayern Munich on the same day.
Manager Arne Slot praised his side’s comeback but lamented missed chances, citing fatigue from training and heat as factors. Goalkeeper Alisson Becker missed the match due to personal reasons, while an emotional tribute was held before kickoff for Diogo Jota, who recently passed away in a car crash.
The Reds continue their pre-season preparations as they integrate key new signings ahead of the upcoming campaign.
