Former world 100m champion and Olympic medalist Fred Kerley has officially withdrawn from this week’s US Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon, effectively ending his bid to compete in the upcoming World Championships in Tokyo this September.
Kerley, 30, made the announcement via social media, stating, “The 100m should be a straight sprint. 2025 has presented many hurdles. Taking some time out to get back on track. No USATF Champs this year. Thanks to all my supporters.”
A prominent figure in global sprinting, Kerley claimed the 100m silver at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and bronze at the 2024 Paris Games. His crowning moment came in 2022 when he secured gold at the World Championships—held at Hayward Field, the same venue hosting this year’s US Championships and trials.
Although Kerley posted a solid 9.98 seconds in May, his 2025 season has been marred by off-track controversies. He withdrew from a major meet in Miami earlier this year after a series of legal troubles. In January, Kerley was arrested in Miami Beach and charged with battery against a police officer, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct following a confrontation. He also faces a separate charge of domestic violence by strangulation stemming from an incident in May 2024.
With his withdrawal, Kerley will not be part of Team USA at the World Championships this year. The sprinting community now turns its attention to emerging contenders looking to fill the void left by one of America’s top sprinters.
