Government Cracks Down on Banditry Financiers in West Pokot as CS Murkomen Issues Stern Warning

The Kenyan government has launched a sweeping investigation into individuals and entities suspected of aiding banditry in the North Rift, with political and religious leaders topping the list. Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen made the revelation during a tense address in West Pokot County, where he faced fierce backlash from both local leaders and residents.

Murkomen disclosed that over 30 persons of interest across West Pokot, Turkana, Samburu, and Baringo counties are under scrutiny, including actors posing as activists. “We will deal with you ruthlessly,” he warned, declaring the government’s unwavering resolve to dismantle bandit networks in the region.

He further raised alarm over disturbing reports of human cannibalism and organ trafficking in West Pokot. Authorities have recently discovered more than eight mutilated bodies, intensifying concerns about rising lawlessness.

The announcement was met with open defiance from local leaders, including former West Pokot Governor John Lonyangapuo, who criticized Murkomen’s aggressive stance and urged restraint in security operations. “Mambo ya kutumia risasi kwa wanyama sisi tunasema hapana,” Lonyangapuo stated, emphasizing the need to protect innocent lives and livestock.

Despite the opposition, CS Murkomen maintained that the government will not negotiate with criminals. “Hatuwezi negotiate mambo ya banditry ambayo inachangia insecurity hapa West Pokot,” he asserted, vowing continued action against all involved.

The escalating security situation underscores the government’s growing concern over deeply entrenched criminal networks and the need for both accountability and long-term stability in Kenya’s troubled northern frontier.
