Switzerland midfielder Granit Xhaka has signed a three-year contract with Sunderland, marking his return to the Premier League two years after leaving Arsenal for Bayer Leverkusen. The newly-promoted English club confirmed the transfer on Wednesday, with reports valuing the deal at £17.3 million ($23.14 million).
Xhaka, 32, spent seven successful years at Arsenal, making 225 Premier League appearances and winning the FA Cup twice, before moving to Leverkusen. During his debut season in Germany, he helped the club win the Bundesliga and reach the Europa League final.
Speaking on his move, Xhaka said, “I’m very proud to be here. When I spoke to the Club, I was excited and I felt the energy and mentality that all the people and players have.”
The signing comes just a week after Leverkusen boss Erik ten Hag insisted Xhaka was “too important” to be sold. Sunderland kick off their Premier League campaign on August 16, hosting West Ham United.
