Highway Robbery Suspect Nabbed in Makueni After Violent Carjacking on Nairobi-Mombasa Road

A major breakthrough has been made in a violent highway robbery case after detectives arrested a key suspect linked to a brutal carjacking incident that left one motorist injured along the busy Nairobi-Mombasa highway.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), 38-year-old Musyoka Mutava was apprehended in Ukia, Makueni County, following a meticulous forensic probe and tactical pursuit. He is believed to have orchestrated the ambush that targeted a motorist transporting two male hitchhikers from Mariakani to Malaba.

The incident unfolded near Kiunduani Market when one passenger requested to alight. As the driver slowed down, two armed attackers emerged from a nearby thicket, struck the motorist with a blunt object, and hijacked his silver Subaru Trezia along with personal belongings.

The victim was rushed to Makindu Sub County Hospital where he received treatment and was later discharged.

Police recovered the stolen vehicle and a getaway motorcycle during the arrest operation. Also seized were two sets of number plates—KDH 486F and KDN 192W—along with tools believed to have been used in the crime.

While Mutava remains in custody pending arraignment, law enforcement officers have launched a manhunt for his accomplices, who remain at large.

“The operation is ongoing, and we are following crucial leads that could help dismantle this syndicate,” the DCI confirmed in a statement.

The arrest marks a significant step in combating highway-related crimes as authorities tighten security along major transit routes.
