The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced the prequalification of Chinese contractors for a major infrastructure project aimed at transforming the Pangani–Muthaiga–Kiambu–Ndumberi Road into a modern dual carriageway. The project follows a financing deal from China’s Export-Import (EXIM) Bank, with final funding to be released upon the signing of a commercial contract.
The ambitious upgrade targets the B32 corridor, a crucial link within eastern Nairobi, converting the current two-lane road into a four-lane dual carriageway complete with service lanes and pedestrian walkways. The expansion is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion along Kiambu Road and the Thika Superhighway.
Key features of the project include:
- Upgrading the Muthaiga–Kirigiti–Ndumberi stretch to a four-lane dual carriageway.
- Construction of new interchanges at Kamiti Road, Banana Road, and the Northern Bypass.
- Installation of six pedestrian footbridges.
- Enhancement of key spur roads such as Ridgeways Road and Evergreen–UN Avenue through Runda.
- Provision of pedestrian infrastructure including walkways and footbridges.
The project is scheduled for a 36-month construction timeline, followed by a 24-month defects notification period. According to KeNHA, prequalification is open to Chinese firms or consortia led by Chinese companies, in line with conditions tied to Beijing’s financing.
Interested applicants must demonstrate a minimum annual construction turnover of USD 250 million over the past five years to qualify. The prequalification tender is set to close on August 22.
This road expansion marks a critical step in improving urban mobility and boosting economic connectivity in one of Nairobi’s fastest-growing regions.
