Kenya Airports Authority Issues Travel Alert Ahead of CHAN Tournament in Nairobi

The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has issued an important travel advisory for all passengers using Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and Wilson Airport, urging them to anticipate potential delays due to road closures in Nairobi. The temporary traffic disruptions are in place to facilitate the African Nations Championship (CHAN), a major continental football tournament hosted by Kenya.

In a statement released on Sunday, KAA cautioned travelers that several key roads in Nairobi will be either partially or fully closed throughout the day to enable the smooth movement of participating teams, officials, and fans. The closures are also part of broader efforts to tighten security around match venues.

Key Road Closures & Suggested Alternatives

KAA has outlined the following roads as affected, with recommendations for alternate routes:

  • Aerodrome Road: Fully closed from Madaraka Roundabout to Bunyala Roundabout. Use Likoni Road via the Enterprise Road junction or Southern Bypass.
  • Lang’ata Road: One lane closed between Madaraka Roundabout and Lusaka Road. Suggested alternatives: Raila Odinga Road or Muhoho Road.
  • Mombasa Road: One lane closed between Lusaka Roundabout and Bunyala Roundabout. Travelers can divert via Limuru Road or Kiambu Road.
  • Thika Road: Passengers heading to Nairobi CBD are advised to use the Eastern Bypass, Limuru Road, or Kiambu Road.

Advisory to Air Travelers

All air passengers are advised to:

  • Confirm flight schedules with their airlines in advance.
  • Allow additional travel time when heading to or from JKIA and Wilson Airport.

The CHAN tournament, organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), is a biennial event that has attracted significant international attention. With large crowds expected, Nairobi residents and visitors should plan accordingly to minimize inconvenience.
