Kenya and China Deepen Military Ties at PLA Anniversary Event in Nairobi

Kenya and China have reaffirmed their growing military partnership during celebrations marking the 98th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) of China, held at the Chinese Embassy in Nairobi.

The event brought together senior military officials, diplomats, and government representatives from both countries. Discussions centered on strengthening bilateral defense ties and fostering global peace through shared initiatives.

Chinese Ambassador to Kenya, Guo Haiyan, in her final official address, underscored the PLA’s transformation over the past century, attributing its evolution to the leadership of the Communist Party of China and the resilience of the Chinese people. She emphasized China’s unwavering commitment to peace, referencing the nation’s major role in United Nations peacekeeping missions—having deployed over 50,000 personnel to 25 missions since 1990—and ongoing naval escorts in the Gulf of Aden.

Guo also cited President William Ruto’s recent state visit to China as a catalyst for deeper military collaboration, particularly in areas such as personnel training, counterterrorism, and joint exercises.

Kenya Army Commander Lieutenant General David Keter lauded the PLA’s professionalism and highlighted the value of military exchange programs, which have enhanced the strategic and operational capacities of Kenyan troops. He also pointed to successful joint efforts in disaster response and peacekeeping operations as proof of a strong and growing defense relationship.

The event concluded with a symbolic toast to the enduring Kenya-China partnership, celebrating shared aspirations for global stability and mutual respect amid shifting international security dynamics.

As both nations continue to navigate regional and global challenges, their strengthened military cooperation stands as a testament to a broader commitment to peace, capacity-building, and diplomatic engagement.
