KMPDU Urges Immediate Withdrawal of Intern Doctors from Kiambu Amid Ongoing Strike

The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists’ Union (KMPDU) has called for the immediate removal of all medical officer interns stationed in Kiambu County, citing unsafe working conditions due to a prolonged doctors’ strike.

In a statement issued by KMPDU Secretary General Dr. Davji Atellah, the union expressed deep concern over the deteriorating healthcare environment in the county, emphasizing that the ongoing industrial action has crippled critical services and undermined the quality of training required for medical interns.

“Interns depend on the supervision and mentorship of senior doctors, which is currently lacking in Kiambu. Deploying them in such an environment endangers both the interns and the patients they serve,” said Dr. Atellah.

The union has called on the Ministry of Health and relevant authorities to urgently reassign the affected interns to counties with stable healthcare systems and proper support structures. KMPDU warned that the current conditions in Kiambu make it impossible to uphold the standards outlined in the national internship program.

The doctors’ strike in the county, now in its several weeks, stems from unresolved issues including delayed salaries, poor working conditions, and critical shortages of medical supplies. Despite repeated appeals, the county government has yet to resolve the impasse.

KMPDU’s latest move increases pressure on the Kiambu County administration to find a swift resolution, as concerns grow over patient safety and the integrity of medical training in the region.
