Health officials in Mombasa County have launched investigations following the unexplained deaths of four residents in the Migadini area of Changamwe. The deceased, who passed away between July 9 and mid-July 2025, are believed to have succumbed to a mysterious illness that causes severe swelling, pus-filled sores, and rapid decomposition.
The first victim, a 91-year-old woman, died at home and was initially reported to have had a chronic illness. However, subsequent cases — involving men aged 55, 57, and 69 — have raised alarm in the local community due to the similarity of symptoms and disturbing physical effects.
Area residents describe the victims’ bodies as swollen, blistered, and emitting foul odors. “The body was swelling like it had boils, and it had white patches all over,” one local, Michael Nyamai, reported. Another resident, Maulid Hassan, echoed the concern: “A person swells up like an elephant, develops blisters, and gives off a terrible smell. We don’t understand what this disease is.”
The community is now gripped with fear and uncertainty, with several residents seeking hospital care after developing similar symptoms. Others suspect environmental toxins may be to blame, pointing to emissions from nearby industrial facilities.
“We’re not quick to assume it’s Mpox,” said Peterside Otieno, a Migadini resident. “There’s a possibility the deceased were exposed to toxic fumes from surrounding factories.”
Health officials have since visited the area to collect samples and conduct further assessments. While the cause of the deaths remains unknown, the Mombasa County Government has urged residents to exercise vigilance by maintaining high levels of hygiene, avoiding contact with unidentified bodies, and promptly seeking medical care if unwell.
Authorities also appealed to the public to report any suspected cases or missing persons as investigations continue.
As the community waits for answers, concern grows over the potential public health risk — and the need for swift government action to prevent further tragedy.
